Mantra Mondays Class at West 4th Lululemon in Kitsilano

This May, the West 4th Lululemon store in Kitsilano is offering free classes in mantra meditation.

I had never taken a class in this so I decided to check it out. Lululemon has offered so many different interesting classes in the past in addition to the usual yoga and running. Some of the more unusual ones: Thai boxing, book binding, candle making and laughing yoga.

The class was led by Jazz Braden.

‘Learn mantra to inspire courage, strength, peace and inner wisdom to deepen your yoga practice while uncovering the power of your inner voice.’

Chip Wilson to Step Down as Lululemon Chairman

I have to admit that I was very sad to read the Lululemon press release that announced that Lululemon co-founder, Chip Wilson, will be stepping down as Chairman in the coming year.

This is an end to an era that I do not want to face. So much of Lululemon’s success can be attributed to Chip and Shannon Wilson, so what will happen when they are gone?

I was there when this store opened in my neighborhood of Kitsilano in Vancouver. I was there in the early days when Chip himself was in the store and tried to sell me product. I was there years later after Lululemon had much success and he still tried to educate me when I was looking at mens pants one day. I was so impressed with his enthusiasm and down to earth manner both at the beginning and in later years.

This is someone who had the vision to foresee the popularity of yoga and provided the most comfortable and stylish clothing for it. Years ago, few people did yoga and now, yoga classes are as prolific as Sushi restaurants in Kitsilano. Now, Lululemon is so much more than being a yoga clothing store. There is dance wear, running apparel and much more.

Controversy? Yes. In the end, any comment or action could be misconstrued or exaggerated. In my opinion, most of the criticism was totally unfounded. But once somebody becomes the target of late night talk shows and angry people who can’t fit into yoga pants, there’s not much you can do.

So thank you Chip Wilson for your vision. I can honestly say that my lifestyle has changed for the better because of Lululemon. I regret that you are leaving Lululemon. I wonder what will become of the company. I do not have much confidence. I fear the future.

Oh yeah, there was something else in the news release about Christine Day finally getting her successor. Watch the movement of the stock to see what stockholders think of the decision.

Lululemon CEO Search Window Displays Pedro for CEO

As most people know, Lululemon’s CEO has stepped down and there is a search for a new CEO.

I was walking by the flagship store, West 4th Kitsilano Lululemon and saw their window displays proclaiming their job ad. I loved these windows!

It says, ‘and you thought see through pants were an issue…now accepting CEO applications’.

Here is another sign that says, CEO WANTED APPLY WITHIN.

Here is a button that’s hard to see with the window glare, but it says, PEDRO FOR CEO.

I happened to be walking past the downtown Robson Street Lululemon store and they also have their windows with the job sign. This one says, NOW HIRING CEO.

Here’s another sign on the other side of the window. The sign says, CEO WANTED APPLY WITHIN.

Here is a white tank top that says, PEDRO FOR CEO. I asked an educator why they said that. She told me that it was in reference to the movie, Napoleon Dynamite. I had never seen the movie so I didn’t clue in. She said that it was a joke in the movie.

Here is the white t-shirt version.

Here is the label. It says that it was Designed in Vancouver and Made in Peru. The educator said that these shirts have been in the store for three days. I was surprised to hear that since the resignation announcement was not that long ago.

Did they have these white shirts and then sent them somewhere to get silk screened? Did they get the signs made quickly? Or was the resignation anticipated and all of this stuff made in advance?

For anybody who’s interested, here is the Lululemon headquarters and the entrance to the parking lot! It is in beautiful Kitsilano and blocks from the famous Kitsilano beach! It is also blocks from the first Lululemon store that was opened by Chip Wilson.

Maybe you’ll get an executive parking spot! lol

In keeping with their fun job descriptions, some of the job requirements: it’s seeking a leader who can hold a headstand for at least 10 minutes, has Oprah and Chip Wilson on speed dial (among others), communicate in Sanskrit and down wheatgrass and tequila shots on Fridays for work-life balance.

I hear that they received over 160 applications already! I’m looking forward to finding out who will be the next CEO.

Added today:

I found this Workopolis job search site ad in the daily free paper today.

‘Looking for a company that isn’t afraid to be transparent?’ I’m sure that’s in reference to the recent sheer yoga pants incident.

You can also see a yoga mat, a CEO name plate and a pair of groove looking yoga pants.  Wonder who they’re making fun of?

Best Lululemon Store I’ve Been to: Whistler, BC, Canada

I’ve been to a number of Lululemon stores over the years. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the first store, the Lululemon on West 4th Avenue in Kitsilano, in my neighborhood.

I went to Whistler for the weekend and was excited to see what they had to offer in this small mountain village. As I was walking around the village I spied several people carrying the red Lululemon shopping bags.

Here is the address:

4154 Village Green
Whistler, BC Canada
V0N 1B4

I have to admit that I was really impressed with this store! It was in a round shaped building which I think had been occupied by a sports store of some sort. Once they left, Lululemon took this space over and turned it into this great retail space!

When I walked around, I was entranced with the layout. I could have easily stayed there for hours trying on clothes and looking at everything. It was definitely consumer friendly. I loved the sofas in the middle! It’s so spacious and airy.

Lululemon Red Fleece Canada Lululemon Hockey Helmet Hat 087

This is a red fleece hat made to look like a hockey helmet. This came out during the Vancouver winter olympics in 2010. During the gold medal mens hockey final, most Vancouverites were watching the game on TV. The West 4th Avenue Lululemon store in Kitsilano (the first Lululemon store) also had a huge TV showing the game (the game was being played downtown but tickets were astronomically expensive).

The staff was handing out these hockey helmet hats to passers by.  It also included a black crayon so you could black in a tooth as well so you’d look like a typical toothless hockey player.

As you can see, it has Canada embroidered across the front. There were also navy colored USA hockey helmet hats as well but no one dared to wear that at this time! (I got one for my American friend only after I promised it wouldn’t be worn until after the game was over).

This is the side view of the hat. It shows the Canadian symbol of a maple leaf embroidered. There are also two holes. You can also see the black strap as well.

Here is the other side view, showing the embroidered Lululemon omega symbol.

Here is the view from the top.

Here is a close up view of the black under the chin strap that you can snap closed. There are white fleece ear covers.

Here is the label inside the hat.

This is such a fun hat and a lot of people wore these while participating in the winter olympics festivities all over Vancouver.

I have such good memories wearing that hockey helmet that day especially when the Canadian mens hockey team won the gold medal! The Canadian womens hockey team also won a gold medal! It was so nice for the host country to win double golds for the men and womens teams! (For both men and womens hockey it was Canada, USA and Finland)

(Team USA got their revenge and did win the gold medal for the mens paralympics hockey.)

Lululemon Free Monday Evening Yoga Classes at the Flagship Kitsilano Lululemon Store

Lululemon is famous for providing free yoga classes at its stores as a way to give back to the community.

I have been attending these free classes for years now. I usually go to the other stores, like Oakridge, Robson Street and the Lululemon Lab rather than the Kitsilano flagship store (the first Lululemon store!), which is only a few blocks away from me. The last time I had attended free classes at the Kits store, they held them upstairs and you had to climb these rickety stairs and pose on squeaky floors.

Now, they operate like the other stores, and hold the classes on the sales floor. I like it better that way than the former upstairs venue.

Tonight, the 8 PM class was packed! Mats were mere inches away from each other. We ran the risk of hitting each other with hands, arms, feet and legs. It was almost claustrophobic for me.

I had never had this instructor before at the other stores’ classes. She was quite good though and ran us through the poses at a fairly quick pace. It wasn’t quite power yoga but it wasn’t a normal pace either.

Finally, we have reached the final pose, Shavasana, or corpse pose, where we lie down like a corpse for an extended period to relax. However, for some odd reason, the instructor decided to blast a religious song in the room at that moment! It was so loud, I had to literally plug my ears. That racket wasn’t allowing me to relax at all. I felt sorry for the people who were lying right beside her speaker! Usually, I love the relaxation and serenity of Shavasana, but not this time!

I would love to return to this class but now I don’t know. Maybe if I come next week and she does the same thing, I can just sneak out early! Note to self: put mat close to the door!

Lululemon Photos from the Seawheeze Half Marathon Party Zone 2

I took some photos at the Seawheeze Half Marathon race this morning.

Unfortunately, I woke up late so by the time I got there, most of the racers had past this point. The race started at 7:37 AM and I was almost 6 miles into the race where I was.

It was advertised as:

party zone 2- the world’s largest cheer station

Come out and cheer our runners on at the toughest part of the half marathon, there will be pom-poms, vuvuzelas and sassy signs.

Join us for a complimentary pancake breakfast provided by The Boathouse, high fives and the world’s largest cheer station. We’re gonna be making some noise so bring your “A” game.

time: 7am – 10am

Unfortunately, there wasn’t anywhere near ‘the world’s largest cheer station’ by the time I got there at 9AM. In fact, most of the runners weren’t running, they were walking!

Still, there was a cheer group by the Kitsilano Lululemon still cheering them on as they walked by. I’d say the majority of those cheering were Lululemon employees. They were holding the signs Lululemon had had printed up (and were in the store window) and were waving shredded Lululemon bags as pom poms.

Here’s a mascot!

Not sure what the caveman theme was all about?

There was a pancake breakfast but I think that there was something wrong with the grill because it took 15 minutes (literally!) before I got barely cooked pancakes.

David’s tea had small paper cups of refreshing pineapple tea.

There was a lone band playing half way up the street. I’m sure they were appreciated earlier in the morning.

Here was a few runners with a pace bicycle close by.

They had a few kids playing with some blocks.

I walked down West 4th to see if there was another cheer group and there was a block away.

At Cypress, there was a group of young girls and their parents wearing Ivivva purple outfits.

I’m sure they must have been given them to cheer. They looked nice all matching in their outfits.

Promptly at 9:55 AM, they disbanded and started leaving.

If they wanted to attract more people to cheer, they should have advertised more and maybe offer free lululemon clothing, like they did with the Ivivva girls. I hope there was more cheering at other spots.
