Sunday, April 21st, was the last day of BC’s only Lululemon factory outlet, in Burnaby, not far from Vancouver.
I had heard rumors of the factory outlet closing for a long time but I never actually thought that it would really close! I remember the first factory outlet that I shopped out, on Clark drive in East Vancouver. This one in Burnaby was open at that location for the last few years.
When asked why they were closing, Lululemon said that:
‘Lululemon has decided to change the outlet strategy, choosing to not have outlets in major urban centres. You can still find mark down items on the “we made too much” section on lululemon.com, as well the retail stores will have a mark down rack in stores now, so we are confident you will be able to find our favorite pieces!’
So for locals, the closest factory outlet will be across the border, in Burlington, Washington state, which is also popular. Any time I’ve every been there, the parking lot is mostly BC plates. I have gone there many times and have found a lot of great deals! In Canada, the closest factory outlet is in the next province, in Grand Prairie, Alberta.
I went on facebook to find a special event page created, The E.N.D party. I added myself to the ‘going’ list.
The E.N.D event would include:
- free yoga class
- free dance class
- Music by DJ all day
- dinner catered by Healthfare restaurant
What I was interested in was seeing if there would be some last chance bargains to pick up!
I signed up for the dinner which was at 4:30 PM. The outlet was to close at 4 PM. I planned to be there around 3 PM. I thought that an hour of shopping would work up an appetite. I had thought of taking advantage of the free yoga and free dance but I already had my free yoga class from another Lululemon store in the morning. The weather was also looking iffy, so I wasn’t crazy about the idea of dancing or doing yoga outside.
I got there at 3PM and to my utter shock there was this sign on the door.
I knocked on the door and talked to somebody who said that they had sold out earlier in the day, 12:45 PM! I couldn’t believe it! I was so disappointed! Somebody on facebook had said that everything on Sunday was 50% off the last price so I was really looking forward to that! Saturday’s price discount was $10 off the last price. They updated the facebook page about running out of product, but I had checked the event page, not the general page. Judging from how many people came by, they hadn’t known either.
I couldn’t believe that I had driven all that distance (40 minutes from the Lululemon flagship store in Kitsilano) and ended up empty-handed! It was also still another 90 minutes before the dinner. I was half tempted to just throw the towel in and go home. As I sat in my car waiting, I saw dozens of people expecting to snag a last-minute bargain from the factory outlet and also being disappointed. Who would have thought that they would sell out absolutely everything?
Anyway, we went in and were greeted warmly by the outlet’s staff. They will all go to other Lululemon positions after the outlet closes. The tables were decorated and we got little packets of green tea and Hershey’s kisses! We also enjoyed coconut water, too.
All the tables were decorated for the dinner catered by local restaurant, HealthFare. It was amazing! There were also a number of absolutely decadent desserts, too! All through dinner, we enjoyed music by the DJ, too.
A thank you speech was made by one of the Lululemon staff thanking us for our years of support. As a thank you, we were given a yoga mat! I have been eyeing those mats for years! What a wonderful surprise!
Thank you to this Lululemon factory outlet for going out in fun, style and grace! We will miss you!
